Vaccinations available in Contra Costa County for all people 16 years of age or older
Contra Costa County became the first county in the Bay Area to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to all people 16 years of age or older. That’s faster than the California timeline of making doses available to 16-year-olds starting April 15.
MARTINEZ, California – Contra County public health officials announced Tuesday morning that vaccine eligibility is now open to anyone 16 years of age and older.
According to Anna Roth, director of health for Contra Costa County, the increased supply of vaccines from the state and federal governments means the county can open up eligibility to people between the ages of 16 and 49.
“It’s a beautiful day because it means that any adult person wishing to be vaccinated can be vaccinated in Contra Costa County,” said Diane Burgis, chairman of the Contra Costa County Supervisory Board.
Contra Costa County Health Services said there were appointments available at community clinics. The county announced yesterday its intention to quickly expand the eligibility criteria for vaccinations.
County health officials said they had finally started receiving additional doses of the vaccine from the federal government. So far this week, Contra Costa County has received 84,500 total doses of vaccine from state and federal governments, about 30,000 more than the week before.
“We expected to increase this month, vaccines start to increase this month. I expect that they will continue to increase and we expect more vaccines to become more abundant and more available in the coming weeks,” Roth said.
On KTVU’s The Four, county supervisor John Gioia said 45% of Contra Costa County residents aged 16 and over received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. He said the county’s goal was to have administered one million doses by the end of May. They have already delivered around 640,000, the supervisor said.
