FLORIDA CITY, Florida – On Saturday, anyone who showed up at 18 or older with a doctor’s note or not, and who met or did not meet the eligibility criteria, could get a COVID-19 vaccine at a FEMA site in Florida City.

It is not known why workers administered gunshots to people 18 and older, but demand at the site may have been low over the past week. However, Governor Ron DeSantis’s order states that beneficiaries in this age group must be in a high-risk category and arrive with a doctor’s note or an eligibility form signed by a doctor.

Word quickly spread on social media about the hit-and-miss shots in Florida City, prompting people to hope for a photo at the Youth Activity Center on Sunday.

Saima Haque said a tweet prompted her to drive nearly 100 miles from Boynton Beach in the hopes of being shot.

“I saw a tweet on Twitter about people over the age of 18. They were broadcast yesterday and they were going to do it today as well. My dad at home is sick, so we’re just trying to catch him, ”Haque said. “If that doesn’t work, there’s not much we can do.”

It did not work. In fact, the operators of the FEMA site returned to the governor’s order as soon as the site reopened on Sunday morning.

Florida City Police were on hand to control crowds and help spread the word. Many people who did not meet the requirements were turned away.

Back and forth on the Florida City site prompted the mayor of Miami-Dade to post a tweet aimed at the governor, urging him to expand the eligibility requirements.
