U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., apologized to her constituents on Friday for her “present” vote a day earlier on funding Israel’s Iron Dome defense system and explained why she cried over the floor of the House.
“Yes, I cried,” she wrote in the three-page letter to voters that she posted on her Twitter. “I cried over the utter lack of care for the human beings who are affected by these decisions, I cried against an institution choosing a path of maximum volatility and minimum consideration for its own political convenience.”

Some on social media have speculated that the lawmaker wanted to “vote no but was strategically excluded” and many who commented on her letter to voters said she still did not explain not the reason she voted “present”.
“So many words to say, ‘I think this bill should have been opposed but I was too cowardly to oppose it,” one person commented. Another pointed out that lawmakers had previously criticized former US Representative Tulsi Gabbard for her “current” impeachment vote, saying it was better to take a stand. “We are sent here to lead,” Ocasio-Cortez said at the time.
Ocasio-Cortez wrote in her letter that she believed the United States had given Israel “unconditional aid” for “far too long” while “doing nothing to address persistent human rights violations against the Palestinian people, and that this imbalance of power must center on any honest conversation about Israel and Palestine – in addition to the many other governments that we militarily fund with a model of human rights abuses. “
She stressed that voting against the bill would in no way fund the defense system and argued that there should be more control over all military spending around the world.
The process of bringing it forward was also “deeply unfair,” she said, writing that it had been quietly slipped into routine legislation without any committee debate, markup or regular order. She said the rushing vote had caused “a powder keg of vitriol, spurious framing, deeply racist accusations and representations, and a lack of substantive discussion on the issue.”
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., Also “summarily dismissed” his request to delay the vote by 24 hours, she said.
She called it one of the “most controversial” votes that day, although it was easily passed with just eight House Democrats and one Republican voting against it. Ocasio-Cortez and one other member voted present.
“The damage from this negligent process has created very real ripple effects in our community,” she wrote. “This created a real sense of panic and horror among those in our community who were otherwise thoughtfully engaging in these discussions and fueled the discussion to move to a point where it became clear that this vote would risk a serious devolution of the fabric of good faith community that allows us to responsibly join a fight for human rights and dignity everywhere – from Palestine to the Bronx to Queens. ”

She said the rush to vote threatened to “tear our community apart,” adding that it was not the first time that people’s well-being had been “put aside for political reasons” and that she did not believe that it would be the last.
“To those I have disappointed – I am deeply sorry. To those who think this reasoning is insufficient or cowardly – I understand,” she wrote in closing. “To those who have asked me to suppress the volatility of this moment in our community… I hope that we can take advantage of this moment and this opportunity to engage more deeply and develop a real grassroots movement of community support for them. human rights in the world – which includes cherishing and respecting the human rights of the Palestinian people. ”
