Apple ditches HomePod, but HomePod Mini will stay alive

Apple is ditching the original full-size HomePod and will now focus its efforts on the speakers on the HomePod mini, the company said. TechCrunch Friday night.

Here’s what Apple said in a statement to TechCrunch:

HomePod mini has been a hit since its debut last fall, giving customers incredible sound, a smart assistant, and smart home control for just $ 99. We are focusing our efforts on HomePod mini. We are discontinuing the original HomePod, it will remain available while supplies last through the Apple Online Store, Apple Stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers. Apple will provide HomePod customers with software updates, service, and support through Apple Care.

The Space Gray model of the full-size HomePod is already sold out on Apple’s online store.

The full-size HomePod had excellent sound quality, but it was criticized for its hefty $ 349 price tag at launch. Apple finally lowered the price to $ 299 in April 2019 and released the HomePod mini for $ 99 last year.

The move is not entirely surprising; HomePod sales were reportedly low, and in our review, we felt the HomePod mini sounded good for its size.
