DANVERS, Mass. – Massachusetts farm apologizes after staff accused black family of stealing apples and calling police.
Manikka Bowman and Jeff Myers said in a blog post that they had visited Connors Farm in Danvers on Labor Day, spending over $ 100 on admission, apple picking, food and drink.
But the Cambridge, Massachusetts couple said they were confronted with farm workers over six apples that didn’t fit in the prepaid apple-picking bag.
They said the excess fruit was in their child’s stroller, but intended to pay for it at the farm store, where they also planned to purchase cider donuts.
Bowman, who is vice chairman of the town’s school committee, said a security guard searched his purse instead and the principal called the police when the couple asked for the farm owner’s contact details. The officer who responded, the couple added, accused them of “playing the race card.”
“By jumping straight to a theft hypothesis, Connors Farm created a scene, harassing us and causing our 7-year-old to burst into tears, an anguish that lasted until late into the evening,” the couple wrote. “We wonder if it was already apples? “
The farm, in a Facebook post, said he had apologized to family and would ensure staff “get training on diversity, equity and inclusion.”
