Apple makes repairing your iPhone easier

The initiative will give iPhone owners additional options to address some of the most common issues related to the out-of-warranty warranty, by providing more repairers with Apple (AAPL) parts, tools, training, repair manuals and diagnostics, according to a statement released Thursday.

These documents will be the same as those currently received by Apple's authorized service providers, and at the same price. In the past, unauthorized repair companies could not purchase authentic materials and customers could not rely on outside repairs without voiding the warranty on their device.

This decision came after years of criticism of the company's restrictive policies, which limited repairs only to the Apple Store and its authorized suppliers. This decision should ease the burden on Apple stores as users hang on their phones longer, requiring additional repairs.

Apple also faces increased pressure from state governments to pressure "right to repair" legislation, which would require manufacturers to let consumers fix their devices as they see fit and force these companies to sell their materials to independent repair companies.

Apple has more than 5,000 authorized service providers around the world who repair their products, covered or not covered by the warranty.

The program is launched first in the United States, but it is planned to extend it to other countries. In a pilot program over the past year, 20 independent repair companies provided services in parts of North America, Europe and Asia.

Repair shops wishing to get involved can join the program for free on the Apple website, but they must call an Apple Certified Technician to be eligible.
