On Tuesday, Apple announced the most downloaded apps and games of the year, lists topped with important productivity apps like Zoom, and popular multiplayer hits including Among Us.
Revealed in a press release that named Apple the “Best of 2020” App Store awards, the year’s most downloaded apps and games reflect trends shaped by a global pandemic.
Zoom, a video conferencing app that businesses, government and individuals quickly adopted as coronavirus lockdown orders, has led people in and out of the crowd. The DoorDash food ordering service was another business that boomed thanks to the pandemic, as were Amazon and the Venmo mobile payment apps and Cash App.
Entertainment and social networking apps were big players in 2020, with TikTok and Disney + joining the mainstays of YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Netflix and Spotify. Widgetsmith, which rose to fame thanks to iOS 14’s customizable home screen widgets, also made the cut.
Messenger, Gmail, Google Maps, Google, Google Meet and WhatsApp round out the list of the best free apps.
The App Store’s top paid graphics show a mishmash of apps ranging from stargazing tools to “Star Wars” stickers featuring the Disney + series “The Mandalorian”. TouchRetouch led the pack, followed by Procreate Pocket, Facetune, HotSchedules, AutoSleep, The Wonder Weeks, SkyView, Shadowrocket, Sky Guide, Forest, FlickType Keyboard, Mirror for Samsung TV, Scanner Pro, kirakira +, Toca Hair Salon 3, Screen Mirroring + for Roku, The Mandalorian Stickers, FiLMiC Pro, EpocCam Webcamera for PC, Star Walk 2: The Night Sky Map.
Among us! ranked as the best free game of the year, followed by Call of Duty: Mobile, Roblox, Subway Surfers. Ink Inc., Magic Tiles 3: Piano Game, Brain Test: Tricky Puzzles, Brain Out, Coin Master, Cube Surfer !, Woodturning 3D, Homescapes, Johnny Trigger, Tangle Master 3D, Mario Kart Tour, Fishdom, Sort It 3D , Rescue Coupez, Park Master and UNO !.
Minecraft tops the charts for paid games, followed by Plague Inc., Heads Up !, Monopoly, Bloons TD 6, Geometry Dash, NBA 2K20, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, The Game of Life, True Skate, Clue: The Classic Mystery Game, Terraria, Five Nights at Freddy, Stardew Valley, Papa’s Freezeria To Go !, Bloons TD 5, Exploding Kittens, Farming Simulator 20, Rebel Inc. and Arcadia.
