Ohio State retained fourth place in the college football playoff standings on Tuesday night after calling off its previous game, falling behind No.1 Alabama, No.2 Notre Dame and No.3 Clemson for a second consecutive week.
The top seven teams on the selection committee remained unchanged from last week’s standings after playoff contenders either won comfortably or did not play due to COVID-19 issues.
Texas A&M (6-1) was fifth and Florida (7-1) sixth.

Ohio State (4-0) had to cancel their game at Illinois last week due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in the schedule. It was the second game of the season the Buckeyes missed. One more cancellation would make them ineligible for the Big Ten Championship game and unable to play more than six regular season games.
The No.7 Cincinnati (8-0) also had his last game canceled. The Bearcats will then play on December 12 in Tulsa.
The College Football Playoff has set no minimum number of games played to be eligible for the playoffs. It will simply be up to the selection committee to determine how much is too little.
“There is sometimes a gap between a team that plays eight or nine games and a team that has played three or four games and frankly it is a problem (in the ranking of the teams)”, said the president of the selection committee Gary Barta, who is the athletic director of Iowa.
Barta said the committee discussed the Texas A&M standings ahead of Ohio State, but for now, the Buckeyes and their powerful offense led by quarterback Justin Fields hold last place in the playoffs.
“When these two teams were put together this morning and last night, there just wasn’t enough to put Texas A&M ahead of Ohio State,” Barta said.
Texas A&M comes off a 20-7 victory over LSU which was played in rainy and windy conditions.
Georgia was eighth and Iowa State and Miami rounded out the top 10. Oklahoma was 11th, followed by Indiana and BYU.
The Cougars, who are hoping for a bowl for the New Year, have won a spot.

HERBSTREIT APOLOGY
ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has caused a stir with some of his analyzes regarding the state of Ohio, Michigan and teams using COVID-19 as an excuse not to play.
Michigan did not host in-person team events on Monday and Tuesday after returning at least one positive test to the program. The Wolverines (2-4) are set to host Maryland this week and play at Ohio State on December 12.
“I still think Michigan is waving the white flag, potentially avoiding playing at Ohio State next week,” Herbstreit said.
