The mystery saga of the LG UltraFine screen continues. After the disappearance of the LG 4K UltraFine screen of the Apple Store and the persistent lack of availability for the UltraFine 5K, the plot hardens with the discovery by TidBITS that it is now possible to buy a new 23.7-inch LG screen at Apple unlisted.
The seemingly unexpected display is priced at $ 699. That's the same price as the "old" LG UltraFine 4K 21-inch and a few hundred dollars below the 5K brother's selling price.

The report says that the 23.7-inch screen has only 3360 × 1890 resolution and therefore displays a pitiful 162 PPI by modern standards. This low pixel density means that it can not be considered a Retina display even though it bears the UltraFine mark.
That being said, 9to5Mac found documentation corresponding to the model number indicating that the product had a 3840 × 2160 display, which would represent a more reasonable 4K resolution. It would still be less dense – as it is a diagonal of 23.7 inches rather than 21 inches – but remains at the limit of Retina (so it is possible that the 3360 × 1890 specification shown is one of the macOS standard resolutions, native panel is actually 4K).
The physical appearance of the 23.7-inch screen resembles that of the LG UltraFine 4K, but it features an additional Thunderbolt 3 port at the back, making a total of 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports and of 3 standard USB-C ports for connecting peripherals. Like the current 4K, this screen seems to be compatible with Mac computers and the 2018 iPad Pro.

LG's 23.7-inch UltraFine display is on sale now at select Apple Retail stores. The product is not listed in the Apple Store. You will need to go in person and ask the store staff if they have inventory.
Between this mysterious model and the disappearance of current SKUs, the situation with UltraFine screens is very strange. Combined with all this, Apple is expected to announce a new professional high-end screen this year, perhaps as soon as the WWDC will be held on June 3, alongside the unveiling of the new Mac Pro.
It does not look like the end of the story. We will have to wait and see other developments.
