RYME CITY – Looks like every year a movie is announced and I shake my head to say that a studio has spent so much money on its concept.
The trailer comes out and it intrigues me a bit, then the film comes out and it's hard not to like. The 2019 movie that did this to me is "Pokemon Detective Pikachu".
The film is based on the popular phenomenon Pokémon and more particularly on the game Detective Pikachu Nintendo. Movies based on video games are usually terrible, but I have to admit that this one was not so bad.
Here are some of the clues explaining why "Pokemon Pikachu Detective" deserves to be studied:
The trailers of the film had moments here and there that made me laugh. I was afraid that the funniest parts of the movies were already in the trailer, but I was wrong.
Although the film will not make you fall down the aisle and roll over with laughter, it will pop you up several times and possibly cause a catch or two if you drink a soda at the wrong time.
What I liked was that it made me laugh, me and my 6 year old son. I found that many of the unique speakers and conversations were smart, and he found that many gags and jokes were downright hilarious.
There is one scene in particular that made me laugh, but when I looked down, my son was in tears laughing so loudly. Then he asked me what was the funniest movie I had ever seen. I did not get a good answer, but he jumped to tell me that Detective Pokémon Pikachu was the funniest thing he had ever seen. He is six years old and his answer will probably change in a day or two when he will see something else, but he really enjoyed the movie.
Love it or hate it, Ryan Reynolds has a contagious personality and is charming to spare. Even if we do not see his beautiful face on the screen, we hear his voice as a titular character.
He was in a way the ideal person to express the yellow and fuzzy detective. His voice does not match that of a cat-like Pokémon with thunderous abilities, and this juxtaposition has been a lot of fun. His delivery was also appropriate.
Reynolds is a good actor and there is an art to play. Reynolds lent his voice to the 2013 movie "Turbo", he did a good job and did even better here. Personally, I find that the dubbing is terribly underestimated and that the performance of Reynolds here deserves to be underlined.
This is supposed to be a black movie with dark characters, surprising twists and dark lighting.
The shady characters happen to be other Pokémon, such as Charizards, Aipoms and Lickitungs. Turns imply that Pokémon cross each other twice, and moody lighting is provided by Pokémon that lights up. It's pretty absurd, but it works.
There are enough twists to stay interested. Filmmakers are pretty good at making us understand what a world full of Pokémon and humans looks like and how it works without too much exposure.
The filmmakers also managed to get a lot of heart in the film, especially with a scene that stars Tim, the character of Pikachu and Justice Smith, who will touch you in the heart.
Some twists are a little too telegraphed and others are not winners, but overall, it's a fun trip that may surprise you at least once.
There is a Pokémon called Ditto that can change shape in any way or anything, and sometimes the "Pokémon Pikachu Detective" looks like Ditto.
There was more than one time while I was watching the movie that I thought to myself: "I'm watching" Zootopia ". "Then a few minutes later, I thought," I'm watching "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" Then I would come back and say, "No, it's Zootopia."
Although I'm not saying that "Pokemon Pikachu Detective" is a real scam from one or the other of these films, there are certainly striking similarities that are hard to avoid.
"Pokémon Detective Pikachu" will not be the best movie of 2019, and it's not the best animated / animated movie ever, but it's fun and entertaining, but at least 104 minutes.
Some moments will make you roll your eyes while others will make your children roll in the aisles and at least put a smile on your face.
