(WTVG) – The recall of the drugs used to treat high blood pressure has been extended four times by the FDA and the number of medications involved in this booster has become formidable.

According to the FDA, these recalls, which began in June 2018, involve a number of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), a type of medication used to treat high blood pressure, including valsartan , losartan, irbesartan, candesartan, eprosartan, olmesartan and telmisartan.

The generic versions of the drugs contain impurities known as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and N-nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA), all of which are cancer causing (NDMA and NDEA) or possible carcinogens for humans (NMBA). According to the FDA, most drugs contain impurities above acceptable levels.

Some losartan drugs containing NMBA at certain levels have not been recalled, says the agency, and all ARAs have not been affected by the recall. To find out if yours is, use the search list below or click here.
