Cedar Mountain Wins First Place at Maple River Tournament
MAPLETON – Cedar Mountain finished 3-1 on Saturday at the Maple River tournament, giving the Cougars first place of the day.
The Cougars first beat GHEC / ML / T 25-15, 25-15. Sibley East then beat the Cougars 25-20, 25-22. The Cougars then defeated Maple River 25-12, 25-21 and Sibley East 26-24, 19-25, 15-11.
Hailey Hollar combined 30 kills and 47 digs to lead the Cougars that day, while Nadia Meyers totaled 52 assists, 42 digs, 21 kills and six aces. Megan Sandgren also added 18 kills and 25 digs that day for Cedar Mountain, while Teresa Larsen had nine blocks and 13 kills.
Cedar Mountain (8-6) is in Wabasso on Tuesday.
Wabasso hosts the tournament on Saturday
WABASSO – Wabasso organized a preparatory volleyball tournament on Saturday.
After hitting the Gold Division group, Wabasso fell to BOLD 25-21, 25-22. The Rabbits beat Redwood Valley (25-19, 25-19), Southwest Minnesota Christian (25-10, 12-25, VG) and were beaten by MACCRAY (25-19, 23-25, VG) in the pool See you earlier today. MACCRAY won the tournament.
Kelsey Frank had 55 total assists, six aces and five blocks for Wabasso during the tournament, while Audrey Johnson had 28 digs and Avery Carlson had 21 kills and 19 digs. Kelsey Fischer had 15 kills, five aces and four blocks that day for the Rabbis.
Wabasso welcomes Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.
Football Girls
Westonka Mound 8, New Ulm 3
MOUND – Mound Westonka dominated New ulm 8-3 on Saturday morning in a women’s football match.
New Ulm scored one goal each by Annika Morschauser, Brianna Beranek and Livia Reinarts. Elizabeth Dake made 14 saves for New Ulm in net.
New Ulm (3-6) is at the Fairmont on Tuesday.

SJU 55, MLC 7
COLLEGEVILLE – The Martin Luther College football team were unable to keep pace with the University of Saint John Johnnies (SJU) in a 55-7 loss on Saturday.
The defense put the Knights on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, when cornerback Ben Arndt intercepted a pass and returned it for 22 yards for a touchdown to reduce the deficit to 14-7.
Everything was SJU from that point on, as their balanced offense finished with 554 total yards (301 in the air and 253 on the ground), while the defense held the MLC ground game (averaging 345 , 0 yards per game in the first two weeks) for 88 rushing yards.
The Knights did their best to start the passing game, as Max Nordlie completed 10 of 18 passes, but the Johnnies also kept them 73 yards in the air. Mason Cox led the Knights with three catches for 37 yards, while Jack Vogel added three catches for 25 yards.
Aiden Holien led the defense with 10 total tackles. Arndt’s interception was his third of the season and tied him for second in program history with 14 career interceptions.
MLC fell to 1-2 on the season in loss. SJU improved to 2-0 with the win.
The Knights will return home next week to host Alma College in a game that starts at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Waldorf 3, MLC 0
FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Martin Luther College volleyball team dropped their last non-conference tune 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 28-26) in Waldorf on Saturday.
The MLC hit 0.159 on offense for the game, with Lauren Paulsen, Hannah Willems and Abigail Winkel each credited with four wins apiece.
Kylie Wolf was credited with 11 assists to lead the squad, while Kelsey Birschbach recorded a pair of serve aces.
MLC fell to 1-8 on the season in loss, while Waldorf improved to 7-5 with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, September 21, when they travel to Bethany Lutheran College for the start of UMAC play.
