Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60, according to CNN and the Associated Press.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he led his country to victory in the 1986 World Cup, scoring two of the most iconic goals in history. The first – dubbed the “hand of God” – was controversially scored on a missed handball call. The second, the FIFA website, would later name the “goal of the century”.
Born in Buenos Aires, Maradona reached his greatest fame in Europe, playing for iconic clubs such as Barcelona and Napoli. He would later coach his nation at the 2010 World Cup.
In recent years, Maradona has been in poor health. Earlier this month, he underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve a hematoma, according to ESPN.
The operation was perhaps Maradona’s “most difficult moment”, his lawyer Matias Morla said two weeks ago when the footballer was released from hospital. “It could have cost him his life.”
Maradona was also undergoing ongoing treatment for her alcohol addiction after suffering from addiction issues for years.
According to the AP and the Argentine newspaper Clarin, the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
