Eight firefighters, belonging to two different agencies, were hospitalized Friday after an explosion at an Arizona public service facility in Surprise, where utility-size lithium batteries used in the storage and distribution of solar energy.

Four firefighters from the Peoria Fire Department were seriously injured. A firefighter was in critical condition after losing consciousness. Captain Ken Wier told FOX 10 in Phoenix that two others were in serious condition.
Three of the most seriously injured firefighters were flown to the burning unit at Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix, while the fourth was rushed to a West Valley hospital, told AZCentral.com Michael Selmer, a spokesman for the department.
Four more Surprise City firefighters were taken to a hospital for life-threatening injuries, AZCentral chief of the Surprise Fire Department battalion Julie Moore told AFP.
The Peoria and Surprise Fire Brigades both responded to the APS McMicken Energy Storage Facility at approximately 6:00 pm after someone by spotted spoke, Moore said. Firefighters have begun to inspect a utility-size lithium battery to detect levels of hazardous chemicals. An explosion occurred while a Peoria Fire Hazmat team was attempting to enter the facility.

APS spokesman Alan Bunnell said the facility would cooperate with a thorough investigation into the cause of the blast. He added that firefighters had been called to the scene to investigate a possible failure of the equipment. Firefighters from various agencies in Phoenix gathered at the Maricopa Medical Center on Friday night to gather behind their first responder colleagues, AZCentral reported.
