Despite numbers of cases showing signs of a potential downward trend, Arizona still leads the world in the average number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 per capita.

The state is reporting an average of 121.6 new confirmed cases in the past seven days, according to data from John Hopkins University. California, the second highest tracked jurisdiction in the world, comes in at 109.5.
Five days ago, it emerged that the Republic of Ireland was going to explode past Arizona, as well as everywhere else in the world.
The UK COVID-19 variant, dubbed B117, which studies show to be more contagious than variants currently found in the United States, accounts for 45% of new COVID-19 infections in Ireland. 14 days ago, the country had a seven-day average number of new confirmed cases of 27.4. It skyrocketed to 132.7 5 days ago, before starting to decline.
Arizona is no stranger to being at the top of the COVID-19 charts. The state has been the world’s first hotspot at least three times now.
The first case occurred in early July, when the country’s solar belt states experienced a late spring surge. The state reached number one again on January 4 and stayed there until January 10 when Ireland became the world’s first hotspot. However, the change was short-lived as Arizona recorded a world record of 134.7 new confirmed cases on average per 100,000 population.
Leading the world in new COVID-19 deaths per capita
Newly confirmed cases aren’t the only extent Arizona dominates the world. According to the same data set, Arizona also leads the world in terms of new COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people in the past seven days.
Data shows the state is experiencing an average of 2.16 new deaths from COVID-19, far higher than finalist Czechia at 1.64.
The state has the second highest cumulative death toll per capita in the world, at 151.7 per 100,000 population. Behind the world leader, Belgium, which reports 176.6 deaths per capita.
