Arizona Police have arrested a 59-year-old Seattle man for throwing the skulls and limbs of at least five people in a dense forest near Prescott, Arizona.
Walter Mitchell, who had recently shut down a business called Future GenX that bought and sold corpses for medical research and described himself in a body part trade article as a “veteran body broker”, was placed in detention in Scottsdale. The body parts are all believed to belong to people who donated their corpses for scientific research.
Mitchell was charged on Wednesday with 28 counts of irregular movement of human remains, which is a Class 5 felony.
Authorities were first notified of the grisly remains on Saturday when a hunter reported finding two intact heads with gauze “puppy pads” commonly used in medical research. Authorities later located three more heads and a bunch of assorted limbs in another part of the forest.
Sheriff Scott Mascher told local media they initially opened an investigation into the homicide of a serial killer, but after determining that the “puppy pads” were related to anatomical research, they changed from tactical. “This situation is unimaginable,” Mascher wrote on a Facebook post. “I am truly sorry for the families whose loved ones have been donated and treated so horribly.
Authorities say Mitchell drove 1,425 miles from Seattle with heads and limbs in his car before dispersing them in a forest near Prescott earlier this year. He was living in Scottsdale at the time of his arrest.
“The disrespect shown to the deceased in this case by those accused of caring for their remains is heinous and intolerable,” Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes said in a statement.
