PHOENIX (AP) – Arizona health officials are reporting more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 for a third day.

The State Department of Health Services released its latest daily figures on the virus on Friday, finding 1,251 new cases of the virus and 17 other virus-related deaths.

This brings the total for the pandemic in Arizona to 906,116 cases and 18,100 deaths.

The number of hospitalizations due to the virus has also increased slightly over the past week. As of Thursday, 719 people were hospitalized statewide. Of these, 185 were in intensive care.

The seven-day moving average of daily new cases in Arizona has increased over the past two weeks, from 528.3 on June 30 to 851 on Wednesday. The seven-day moving average of daily deaths in Arizona fell from 10.8 to 11.4 over the same period.

Officials attributed the upward trend to the July 4 rallies and the spread of the delta variant.

Like other states, Arizona has seen a massive slowdown in vaccinations. Over 6.6 million doses have been administered to date. The percentage of the eligible population that has been vaccinated remains at just over 50%. According to the state scorecard, 3.6 million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 3.2 million are fully vaccinated.
