Arlington County is the "city" most fit in America, according to a new report released by the American College of Sports Medicine.

"The balance between healthy behaviors and community infrastructure in Arlington, Va., Earned them first place overall," reads the 29-page report from the American Fitness Index released today. (Tuesday).

The American Fitness Index ranked the District of Columbia in 6th place.

Arlington ranks in the same rank partly because 92.6% of adults reported doing exercise in the last 30 days. In comparison, 75.7 adults in DC reported exercising in the last 30 days.

Arlingtonians also rank first in terms of health, with 71.4% of people considered "in excellent health" or in very good health.

Other specific data helped to improve Arlington's ranking, including the low number of smokers (6.5%) and the low pedestrian mortality rate (less than one death per 100,000 population).

Pedestrian fatalities are a new study variable that this year also added criteria to the ranking based on cycling, air quality and street infrastructure.

The study was funded by a grant from the Anthem Foundation.
