PARKERSBURG – The ArtCart program returns this month, maintaining its fifth year expansion from last year.
ArtCart will continue to teach in the 15 schools without art instruction in each grade 4 and 5 class, reaching approximately 2,000 students.
The ArtCart program was created as a pilot for a school six years ago in hopes of raising awareness of the importance of arts education by providing an opportunity for creativity to underserved elementary schools in the County area of Wood.
Principal Kate Hushion said the ArtCart team are looking forward to a full year of in-person teaching. Last year’s ArtCart offering only allowed half a year of in-person instruction, while the first semester was delivered through virtual instruction.
Hushion is proud that the program persevered and made it work given the difficult circumstances of the pandemic. She hopes this year will bring meaningful and personal interactions with Wood County elementary school students.
She also believes that teaching the arts this year will bring joy and inspiration to elementary school students.
Three new members of the ArtCart instructor team are eager to meet the students and start teaching. Returning ArtCart teachers are Sarah Hoye and Katelyn Smith with newcomers Anna Farson, Elizabeth Grounds and Tara McBride.
ArtCart’s mission remains student-centered, providing elementary school children the opportunity for creative growth and personal development through the processes of artistic exploration and education, she said.
The addition of the ArtCart program is made possible through donations from the Wood County Board of Education, Spartan Foundation, PARS Foundation, Artsbridge, McDonough Foundation, Parkersburg Community Foundation, Parkersburg Women’s Club, West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History and the National Endowment for the Arts with the approval of the State Commission on the Arts.
