MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – What started out as a community service project – is actually getting the community involved.
A member of Youth Leadership Mobile, ”artist and McGill High School senior Sarah Beth Bexley wanted to give back and leave a lasting impression on those visiting the port city.
“And for my community service project, I wanted something that brings the city of Mobile together and shows how cool our city really is,” Bexley said.
His idea led to a “Welcome to Mobile Mural” – painted by none other than Mobilians on one of the exterior walls of Moe’s Original BBQ downtown.
“I thought it would be a good way to spend our Saturday,” said Hong Nguyen.
After completing the Azalée Trail Run – Nguyen – was not the only one who ran to pick up a brush and get to work.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea to bring the community together around this mural. It really makes it about Mobile – the hometown, ”Nguyen said.
The mural inspired by the murals of Disney Paint by Number with the personal touch of the artist.
“For example, I’m a green Azalea Trail housekeeper and you can see in ‘B’ there is a big all green Azalea Trail housekeeper,” Bexley explained.
Little by little and line by line, the team effort took shape.
“We’re going to have a lot of fun… I’m very excited about it,” Bexley said.
And looking at the finished product – all that smile-producing fun and excitement.
Again, the mural is behind Moe’s BBQ in downtown Dauphin, across from Scott Street.
