VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – September is National Literacy Month and the ViBe Creative District, known for being filled with art of all kinds, will blend art with literature and words on Sunday. They organize their first annual edition Virginia Beach Literary Arts Festival.
The festival is to help promote literacy in September for National Literacy Month. ViBe Creative District Executive Director Kate Pittman told News 3 that the festival is about speaking through art, sculpture. There will also be booths from local businesses, bookstores, organizations such as the Virginia Beach Library, among other attendees. There will also be a book exchange.
The overall message, said Pittman, is to promote the importance of literacy.
“Literacy is just another form of creative expression and people who explore fine arts, painting and drawing may also be very interested and do poetry or write books and practice exercises. creative writing. So it all comes together and is a really exciting event here. in the ViBe district. “
Just after 7:45 a.m., the first tents for the Virginia Beach Public Library were set up on the park grounds. Library volunteers said September is also Library Card Month and they will be signing people up for library cards for those who don’t.
The event, Pittman said, is made possible after two years of planning for such an event. She also said they expect around 400 visitors to attend the event.
“This event is something we’ve been thinking about for a long time,” Pittman said. “Of course, challenges such as COVIDv. Have restricted many outdoor and gathering events. So we’re excited to pilot this small-scale project.”
The festival will take place at ViBe Park, located at the corner of Cypress Avenue and 18th Street. The event starts at 1 p.m. and will run until 4 p.m.
