CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – Astronauts in search of space approached the work of batteries and cables outside the International Space Station on Monday.
It was the third exit in space in just two and a half weeks for the space station team.
NASA astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques rushed to exchange their batteries, which began last month. "All right, you're awesome," communicated to Mission Control.
Then, lay a cable outside the 250 km outpost to provide a backup power circuit for the Canadian-made station's robotic arm. extend wireless communications.
The ongoing work on the batteries involves the reinstallation of two old batteries. One of the six new lithium ion batteries not working, McClain had to remove an adapter plate that she had installed.
Last week, the flight controllers used the space station's robot arm to remove the broken battery and the associated charger. By working remotely, the controllers also installed a spare charger and one of the old nickel-hydrogen batteries. The second obsolete battery will enter – robotically – later this week.
NASA said it would send a new battery, although the moment remains to be determined. Until then, this combination of old and new batteries should work well, according to officials.
McClain has now recorded two outings in space and one in Saint-Jacques. Their six-month mission began in December.
The next spacewalk will take place next month by the two Russians aboard. Two other Americans complete the crew of six people.
