According to new research, a huge black hole located about 8000 light-years from Earth has a gravitational attraction that is so powerful that it moves literally.

Black hole The V404 Cygni, an incredible nine times bigger than the sun, draws in the fabric of a companion star. When the material flows to the black hole, it forms a rotating disk about 10 million kilometers wide.

Researchers at the International Center for Research in Radioastronomy (ICRAR) discovered that jets of fast-moving material were shooting from this surrounding disk. "Sickening so fast that their change of direction can be seen in periods as short as minutes."

"We were amazed by what we saw in this system – it was completely unexpected," said Greg Sivakoff, a fellow of the East Asian Observatory involved in research.

According to the team, this strange phenomenon of wobbling reflects one of the effects of Einstein's theory of general relativity, according to which huge objects like black holes can distort space and time, but its speed is striking.

"We have never seen this effect occur on such short timeframes,"said James Miller-Jones, who led the ICRAR team.

The material moves so quickly, in fact, astronomers said it was zooming at a phenomenal speed of 60% of the speed of light.

The orbit of the black hole is misaligned with respect to that of its companion star, which means that when the hole pulls on space and time nearby, it deforms the inner part of the surrounding disc. This distorted or deformed part is then in turn pulled around the rotating black hole, which creates the wobbling effect observed by the researchers.

"You can think of this as a flicker of a spinning top that slows down, but in this case, the flicker is caused by Einstein's theory of general relativity," he says. Miller-Jones explained.
