At Celebrating America concert, Katy Perry goes patriotic to Thom Browne

Katy Perry’s tastes can be eclectic, but when the time comes for a big event, she always goes for a fashion that makes a statement. As the final performer at Celebrate America concert in honor of President Joe Biden, Perry knew she had to pull out all the stops. Her minimalist Thom Browne separates elevated the evening’s stylistic quotient while showcasing a new side to her look. Browne’s all-white cashmere coat, satin corset, and floor-length skirt were cooler than the traditional dress, yet still looked stylish. Performing her hit “Firework” with pyrotechnics lighting up the Capitol, she looked exactly like a modern pop diva.

In the past, Perry has shown his patriotism through Americana-inspired pieces – no musician has worn more flag dresses or Stars and Stripes skirts than she has, and yet 2021 has called for a new verve. The Browne-designed look plays with the all-American iconography that Perry loves but in a low-key way. Detailed with blue satin-covered buttons along the shirt sleeves and red versions at the corset hem and skirt side seams, the outfit hinted at the nation’s colors without going into the territory of costumes and Uncle Sam.

This isn’t the first time Perry has looked for Browne for an important moment. At the launch party for her second fragrance, Killer Queen, in 2013, she arrived at the James Duke mansion in New York City in a gold gown from the Browne Fall 2013 runway show. Voluminous and covered in roses, the look offered a literal nod to the star’s foray into the world of perfume and matched the camp wardrobe she once favored.

Fast forward nearly a decade, and Browne still makes Perry look his best, but in a way that feels high. Simple, majestic and unexpected, Perry’s opening night look underscored his current take on style while paying homage to the overall theme of the night.
