ORANGE – Dilan Fountain enjoyed his six races on Friday night at the Woodward Complex.
The senior running back racked up 217 yards and three rushing touchdowns as Athol defeated Mahar, 42-8, in the first edition of the Thanksgiving rivalry season.
Fountain thanked his offensive line for opening up huge running lanes for him.
“The linemen made big blocks, the holes opened up,” Fountain said. “Without them I wouldn’t have been able to get all the yards I got tonight.”
Athol head coach Bill LaRose praised the efforts of his senior running back.
“Dilan Fountain was hands down the best athlete on the court tonight,” said LaRose. “Mahar didn’t have a meter for him. Every time he touched the ball, he could break it for a big gain.
Despite the domination on the ground, it was the passing game that opened the scoring for the Bears. After a punt, Fountain started the game with a five-yard run before senior tight end Vincent Gordon picked up a 23-yard touchdown pass from QB Caleb Cox three minutes into the first quarter.
The Bears missed their next practice, but the defense kept Mahar off the scoreboard with an interception – the first of five total interceptions on the night for Athol’s defense. Fountain took the next game from 55 yards into the end zone.
The Senators hit back in the second quarter with an 8-minute, 13-game practice ending with a 35-yard touchdown by junior quarterback Kaleb Lemcke to make it 28-8 at halftime.
However, in the first snap of the second half, Fountain brought the ball 50 yards into the end zone and ended his night with a 35-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach for the Senators.
LaRose said it was a big win for his team as Intercounty League North play takes off midway through the season. He added that it’s always special to beat the Senators.
“It’s a great victory for us to get into the thick of our calendar… it was a great victory for our children. LaRose said. “It’s always nice to beat Mahar and we look forward to Turkey Day.”
The Bears (2-3, 1-1) return home next week to face Palmer (4-1, 1-1) while the Senators (1-4, 0-2) hit the road to face Ware ( 5-0, 2-0).
“Palmer is here,” Fountain said, “let’s go get them. “
