ATHOL – It was going to take a power outage to prevent Drury from pushing Louis Guillotte back.
Literally.
The junior kicked Athol’s defense on Friday night, running for 246 yards in the first half. He added a run for seven yards in the second half, but the lights went out in the middle of the quarter and the game was ultimately called off with a 28-0 victory for the Blue Devils at O’Brien Field.
Despite the loss, Athol coach Bill LaRose was pleased with the performance of his understaffed team.
“It was a close game in the first half,” said LaRose. “We are starting four freshmen and four players who have no football experience so I’m happy with how this game went. We have a lot to work on. If we could put the ball in the end zone once or twice in the first half when we were deep it could have been a different ball game. I cannot be disappointed with my team. They learn.
Guillotte did most of his damage in the second quarter. The frame’s opening practice saw him carry the ball in five of the Blue Devils’ six games, ending in a three-yard touchdown run. Guillotte himself converted the two-run try to give Drury the advantage, 8-0.
Athol led him to the Blue Devils 29 in the possession that followed, but quarterback Caleb Cox was knocked out by Jayshawn Moore.
Once again, Drury hammered the ball with Guillotte, who converted a third and 19 with a 36-yard pickup, ultimately bringing him in from six yards to extend the Blue Devils advantage to 14-0 with 4:31. to play in half.
A three-and-out from the Bears gave the ball to the Blue Devils in midfield. A penalty put Drury in a third and 23 from the Athol 46, but Guillotte picked it up, smashed a tackle and sprinted into the end zone at 46 yards and suddenly the Blue Devils took a lead of 20-0 before half-time. .
“Louis is running strong,” said Drury assistant coach Robert Jutras, who coached on the sidelines while head coach Al Marceau was in the press box with an injury. “We like to give him the ball and it’s part of the game plan to be physical up front.”
Guillotte’s big game didn’t just come in attack. The Blue Devils defense forced a three-and-out to open the third quarter and Guillotte charged Athol with a nearly 70-yard punt return that saw Drury advance to the Athol 16.
Two games later, Blue Devils quarterback Anthony Pettengill joined Trey Lepecier for 10 yards in the left back corner of the end zone. Guillotte ran in the scoring two points to give Drury the advantage, 28-0.
“It was a really great team,” LaRose said of Drury. “It wasn’t a very fancy team, but they played football the old fashioned way. They came to you and hit you hard. I have to tip the scales for them, they were big and strong and played well.
Athol kicked off the next possession, and the lights went out after just one play by Drury with seven minutes left in the third quarter, ending the game.
An impressive first workout from the Bears – with Cox hitting Dilan Fountain for a 41-yard winner to put Athol at Drury 25 – derailed by an illegal downline man penalty. Cox’s pass on the fourth and 17th was incomplete as he was under pressure and forced to throw the ball away.
Cox finished with 65 yards in the air, 59 at Fountain. Fontaine also had 53 meters on the ground.
Athol is looking to enter the win column next week when he travels to play Pathfinder in week 2.
