Don’t look now, but the Franklin Tech field hockey team is up and running.
The Eagles went 2-0 in the season Thursday afternoon, dropping to a 4-0 win over Holyoke in a County League game in Turners Falls.
“It’s a great feeling to perform what we’ve been working on for a few years now,” Franklin Tech coach Rian Lovett said. “Girls make things happen on the pitch. “
Lauren Ross scored twice in the first half to give the hosts a 2-0 lead in intermission. Lilly Ross and Kate Trudeau found the back of the net in the second half to put it away. Trudeau, who scored from a penalty corner in the third quarter, also distributed two assists, while Hannah Gilbert controlled the midfielder and also collected an assist.
“Hannah was an amazing addition to our midfield team,” said Lovett.
Maddie Markwell made two saves to earn the Franklin Tech shutout. The Eagles held a 9-5 advantage in the penalty corners.
Westfield 9, Mahar 0 – Visiting Westfield took the Valley League victory in wet conditions at the Woodward complex in Orange on Thursday.
Mahar goalkeeper Bella Bisceglia put in a strong performance, making 23 saves to lead the charge. The Senators managed a corner penalty.
Greenfield 9, Franklin Tech 0 – Emma Savoy scored four goals and added three assists, and visiting Greenfield led 6-0 at halftime en route to a 9-0 Bi-County League victory on Thursday night in Turners Falls.
Azemina Cecunjanin scored a hat trick in the Green Wave victory (1-1, 1-1), while Elderika Cecunjanin and Hannah Poirier also added goals in the victory.
Franklin Tech’s Sofia Moreno and Emma Elliott paced the defensive effort ahead of goalie Emily Merritt, who made eight saves.
Mount Greylock 4, Mahar 0 – Lily McDermott scored twice to take the Mounties to a 4-0 victory in a Grieve League game played Thursday in Williamstown.
Lucy Ioge and Jane Skavlem also found the back of the net in the win.
Mahar goaltenders Mackliney Drew and Maddie Lloyd combined for nine saves in net.
Easthampton 42, Mahar 0 – Easthampton’s Luke Kraus scored four touchdowns, as the visiting Eagles opened the 2021 football season with a 42-0 win over Mahar in an independent football game played at the Woodward Complex in Orange on Thursday night.
Kraus scored two first-half rushing touchdowns – one from 56 yards – to help Easthampton take a 26-0 halftime lead.
On the opening play of the third quarter, Kraus intercepted a pass and sent it back for his third score of the night, then topped it off with a 13-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Shea Healy.

Pathfinder 11, Mohawk Trail 0 – Austin Degnan scored four goals and Byron Peabody scored three goals as the Pioneers walked away with an 11-0 tri-county victory over the Warriors on Thursday at Buckland.
Logan Brothers made 29 saves in the loss to Mohawk Trail.
Wahconah 3, Franklin Tech 2 – It was an engrossing home and away game between the Eagles and the Warriors on Wednesday at Turners.
Wahconah won the first set, 25-23, but Franklin Tech hit back with a 25-16 victory in the second set. The Warriors won the third set, 25-22, and once again the Eagles hit back with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set to force a fifth and final set. It was all Wahconah in the fifth set, winning 15-9 as the Eagles suffered a 3-2 loss to open the season.
Renee Reed had two aces, three assists, seven assists and eight digs in the loss of Franklin Tech. Lillian Poirier had two assists, five assists and nine digs, Lea Chapman recorded six aces and a trio of assists and digs and Faith Smith smashed five assists and added two blocks.
