Athol Daily News – HS Roundup: Mahar and Greenfield play to draw

It was a back-and-forth affair between the Mahar and Greenfield women’s football teams on Wednesday night at Orange.

Both teams scored one goal in each half to lead to a 2-2 draw at the Woodward Complex. Even though it ended in a tie, the Senators had a 17-7 advantage.

“We drew tonight, but it was like a loss,” said Senators coach Chad Softic. “Greenfield took it from us in the second half and we had to hold on for life. We need to play with more urgency and the second half of games continues to haunt us, but once again, great work from Greenfield tonight.

The Green Wave opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, Azemina Cecunjanin finding the back of the net on a Suhani Patel flat. Natalie Belloli had the answer for Mahar in the 33rd minute to make it a 1-1 game before halftime.

Sienna Moore gave the Senators the lead 2-1 on a 58th-minute penalty, but Emma Savoy forced the tie with a late goal, with Cecunjanin’s assist going.

Taylor Soucie made five saves for the Senators while Makayla Valente also made five saves for Greenfield.

Boys football

Border 2, Easthampton 0 – Two goals from Devin Niles kept the Redhawks unbeaten with a 2-0 Moriarty League win on Wednesday at Easthampton.

Tyler Dubreuil assisted on Niles’ two goals, one at each half. Dylan Martin stopped the only shot he faced in Frontier’s net.

“Our defense was phenomenal today,” said Redhawks coach Evan Horton.

Griffin Foskitt of Easthampton made five saves.

South Hadley 1, Mahar 0 – Charlie Anischik’s goal emerged as the winning tally, and the Tigers clinched a fine 1-0 victory over Mahar in action on Wednesday.

Ben Foley was credited with assists on Anischik’s strike, while South Hadley goalkeeper Tyler Evans stopped all three shots he faced in the net.

Gavin Sullivan made five saves in the Senators loss.

“We’re definitely progressing from where we started this season,” said Mahar coach Dan Guertin. “The young players have made tremendous gains in every game. ”

Sabis 7, Greenfield 3 – Henry Zaccara scored two goals for the Green Wave, but host Sabis took a 6-2 halftime lead en route to the Schmid League victory on Wednesday at Springfield.

Jackson Campbell scored Greenfield’s third goal, while Jayson Smith and Theo Popusoi were credited with assists. Daniel Pena-Chadee made 27 saves in front of the net.

Sabis’s Eric Kibarra scored four goals to set the pace for the hosts.

Granby 9, Athol 1 – Angel Castillo got the only bear count as Athol fell to the Rams, 9-1, in a Schmid League game in Athol on Wednesday.

Connor Mahoney collected the assist on Castillo’s goal. Liam Brown of Granby had a hat trick in the win.

Volleyball

Westborough 3, border 0 – To Westborough, the Redhawks suffered a 25-22, 25-14, 25-19 loss on the road Wednesday.

Lilah Evans had five kills and five aces in loss, with Jillian Apanell adding three kills. Sydney Scanlon had 12 assists and Booke Davis scored three aces and had 14 digs in the losing effort.

Golf

Franklin Tech 22, Greenfield 2 – Gabe Mota was the match’s medalist in a 2 of 36 game, helping the visiting Eagles to a decisive 22-2 victory over Greenfield in a Bi-County League East game on Wednesday at Greenfield Country Club .

Mota won all four points of his game at No.3. Teammates Anthony Zager (37) and Brady Booska (38) also beat 40, while Aiden Bailey shot 40 on the number to help with the balanced roster. by Franklin Tech.

Border 15½, Palmer 8½ – Back-to-back wins have done the Redhawks good, as the Frontier No. 4-6 players added 11½ of a possible 12 points in Wednesday’s win in the Western Suburbs over Palmer at the Quaboag Country Club.

Ryan Cetto took three points in his match at No.2, taking the day’s low shot from Frontier (41). Kevin Baumann shot 43 and won his match while Cam Skiffington (45) and Cade Allenby (46) swept all four points in their respective games.

Pathfinder 12, Mohawk Trail 12 – Everything was deadlocked for the Warriors and Pioneers on Wednesday at Edge Hill Golf Course, although Pathfinder’s visit won the tiebreaker by three strokes in Bi-County West action.

The day’s weak round of Mohawk Trail went to Oliver Johnson in third place (50). Phineas Tuttman (53), Ben Thompson (54), Logan Moore (54) and Douglas Wilcox (55) all contributed in team total points, with Thompson and Tuttman combining for six of eight points in Game 1s. and 2.
