MAPPA, the studio responsible for Attack on Titan Final Season, has announced that the season will continue with Part 2 set to debut in 2022.

Attack on Titan Final Season is receiving Part 2 slated for release in 2022. The hit animated series is currently airing season 4 in Japan as well as internationally via streaming services like Crunchyroll and Funimation. In the United States, the English release of Attack on Titan Final Season also aired on Adult Swim’s late-night Toonami programming block, though delayed for a few weeks. As the name suggests, this will be the last season of The attack of the Titans, but this last season is dragging on.

As readers of the The attack of the Titans manga that the anime is based on already knows, there is more story to cover than what the remaining Season 4 episodes would allow. Knowing this, many had already guessed Attack on Titan Final Season would be continued in a way, with the announcement of a movie to wrap it all up as a likely option. However, the studio responsible for Attack on Titan Final Season, MAPPA, instead announced a second half of the final season.

Attack on Titan Final Season Episode 16 has only just aired in Japan, and although initially billed as the final episode of Season 4, it came with a teaser for Episode 17 (via @AnimeTV_JP). Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2 is announced to be back “This winter“, which probably means early 2022.

While admittedly vague, anime release schedules typically follow a quarterly pattern, with winter shows typically coming out in January or February. This makes it likely that a version “This winter“means early 2022. However, Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1 started airing at the end of December, so a release in the final weeks of 2021 isn’t entirely out of the question.

Starting with the anime’s most recent entry, Season 4 Episode 16 “Above and Below,” the series has 23 manga chapters to adapt. Previously, Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1 adapted 26 chapters of the manga into its 16 episodes, so it states that the remaining chapters of the manga would be enough to fill at least 16 more episodes. With so much history to cover, the decision to add a second half to Attack on Titan Final Season is a much better choice than a movie. While a movie could potentially be a more prestigious way to end the popular series, a batch of new episodes will allow The attack of the Titans the screen time it takes to give the end of the story the attention it deserves.
