INDIANAPOLIS (TO WISH) – Some Afghan evacuees are heading for central Indiana.
Representative Greg Pence posted on social media Tuesday morning that he had received confirmation from the Defense Department that Camp Atterbury would temporarily house Afghan evacuees.
The Indiana National Guard said the location, through the United States Department of Defense and Northern Command, will provide the State Department with “transportation and temporary accommodation service, as well. support within the United States for Afghan special immigrant visa applicants, their families and others. people at risk in adapted facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as soon as possible.
Pence went on to say that over the next few weeks Atterbury will accommodate around 5,000 people, which matches the capacity of the location.
The announcement comes after the last US troops withdrew from Afghanistan on Monday afternoon, ending the Americans’ 20-year war in the Middle Eastern country.
“As Hoosiers, we are proud to do our part and provide a temporary home for the Afghan evacuees who have supported this nation,” said Governor Eric J. Holcomb. “Our federal partners are taking the necessary and appropriate steps to establish that there is a smooth process to enable these men, women and children to quickly find their permanent home across the United States. I have confidence in the ability of the Indiana National Guard to support this federal mission. “
The Atterbury Task Force, which is made up of active duty members and the National Guard, will help support this federal government mission, working to provide housing, medical care, logistics and transportation to Afghans evacuated upon their arrival.
