When transferring graduates Demetris Robertson came to Auburn after three years in Georgia, he was looking for a place where he could step in and contribute. After losing his three best receivers of the 2020 season, Auburn was a great place for the 6-foot, 185-pound product from Savannah, Ga.
Ranked one of the top receivers in his high school class, Robertson made an All-America freshman in California in 2018 with 50 catches for 767 yards before returning to his home state to play for Georgia where he caught. 42 passes for three touchdowns in three seasons.
After an average opener for Auburn with three catches for 28 yards in a 60-10 win over Akron, Robertson grabbed a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another in the 62-0 win over Saturday against Alabama State.
His two touchdowns received came from the quarterback Bo Nix. The first was in the second quarter on a six-yard that Nix tucked into the corner of the end zone that Robertson tore in the air just before going out of bounds. The second was 28 yards in the third quarter when Robertson slipped behind the defenseman and landed a perfect Nix strike.
His 46-yard TD came in in the third quarter when he came out of defense and rounded the left sideline with an escort from tight end John Samuel Shenker. Robertson finished the day with three catches for 48 yards, including two touchdowns, and 46 rushing yards.
“I was very satisfied and grateful for the opportunity,” said Robertson. “My teammates and coaches put me in a position to play. I felt like we had left a lot on the pitch in the first half, including when I let a pass from Bo slip through my hands.
The Tigers remedied the slow start with a school record of 35 points in the third quarter. “We needed dynamic play and the guys are counting on me,” said the catcher. “I was happy to be able to make big plays. “
Coach Bryan Harsin said he was not surprised with Robertson’s performance. “He has great speed and did a really good run in reverse,” said Harsin. “He has done a good job since his late arrival. He’s a very good player and a great person who takes care of his business. He is very proactive in doing the things he needs to do. What I like most about him is his good attitude.
In other news and notes:
* Robertson is Auburn’s first player with three touchdowns in a game since Ja Tarvious Whitlow did against Mississippi State in 2019. The last Tiger with two touchdowns in a game was Seth Williams against Kentucky last season.
* The last time Auburn scored on offense, defense and special teams was against Liberty in 2018. Auburn is 23-1 since 2012 when he scored a non-offensive touchdown.
* The last time Auburn scored 60 or more points in consecutive games was in 1932 against Birmingham Southern (61) and Erskine (77). Auburn’s 122 points against Akron and Alabama State to open the 2021 season are tied for the fourth most points scored in the first two games of a season in program history.
* The 35 points in the third quarter equal Auburn’s record for most points in a quarter (also against New Mexico State, 1993). It’s Auburn’s record for most points in the third quarter. The 42 points in the second half equal Auburn’s record for most points in the second half (also against New Mexico State, 1985).
* The last time Auburn had a pair of 100-yard rushers in back-to-back games was in 2014 against Louisiana Tech and LSU (Nick Marshall and Cameron Artis Payne).
* Auburn’s 1,151 total offensives in the first two games of the season are the highest in history, surpassing the 2009 season when Auburn had 1,145.
*Bigsby Reservoir is the 48th player in Auburn’s career history to run for over 1,000 career yards. He needed 47 yards to get into the game to cross that mark and finished with 122 yards on 11 carries against the Hornets. He now has 1,075 career rushing yards to rank 45th all-time.
It was Bigsby’s sixth career 100-yard game and his third straight 100-yard game since last season. Bigsby’s 51-yard run in the third quarter lasted his entire career. His precedent was 42 yards against Texas A&M last season.
* Nix is now 8th in career touchdown passes with 33, passing his father Patrick nix (31 from 1992-95). Next is Nick Marshall (34 from 2013-14), Jarrett stidham (36 from 2017-18). This is his seventh career game with several touchdown passes.
* Nix now ranks 7th in career passing yards at Auburn with 5,340. Next is Jarrett stidham (5,952 yards from 2017-18). Nix is 6th in attempted passes with 773. Next comes Dameyune Craig (782 from 1994-97). Nix is 6th in career assists with 460, scoring Pat Sullivan (452 from 1969-71). Then is Jarrett stidham (470 from 2017-18).
* Nix made his 26th consecutive start to quarterback, tied for fifth with Charlie Trotman (1977-79) in the most consecutive QB starts at Auburn since 1969. The leader is Stan white, with 45 consecutive departures from 1990 to 1993.
* TJ Finley’s 49-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Johnson was the first scoring play for the two in their Auburn careers.
* Jarquez Hunter’s 94-yard touchdown run was the longest in Auburn history. The previous long was 92 yards by Ralph O’Gwynne against Loyola in 1936. Hunter is Auburn’s first freshman to open the season with back-to-back 100-yard games since. Ontério McCalebb in 2009. Hunter already ranks 29th among Auburn’s freshman rushers for a season with 257 yards. Next comes James Joseph (265 in 1986) and Bo Nix (313 in 2019).
*Sean jackson scored his first career touchdown on a 4-yard run.
*Marquis Burks recorded his first career forced fumble and the recovery by Wooden colby was the first of his career.
* Roger McCreary’s fifth career interception was the longest of his career at 35 yards and his first career scoring.
*Zakoby mcclain recorded his eighth career double-digit tackle game. McClain has led the Tigers with 10 tackles this season, marking the 10th time he has been the team’s leading tackle.
*Barton Lester blocked a punt in the first quarter, Auburn’s first blocked kick of the season
*Wooden colby blocked an Alabama state field placement attempt. It was picked up by Nehemiah Pritchett for an 80-yard return and his first career scoreline. It was Auburn’s first blocked goal for a touchdown since Neiko Thorpe did it against Kentucky in 2009 (69 yards).
*Anders Carlson is now 4th in his career at Auburn with 297 points – next is John Vaughn (312 points from 2003-06). Carlson is now 5th in his career in the PAT at Auburn with 129, overtaking Damon Duval (125 from 1999-2002). Next on the list is Cody Parkey (136 from 2010-13). Carlson is 3rd in career goals scored at Auburn with 56. Next is Wes byrum (60 from 2007-10).
* Auburn senior All-American kicker Carlson has scored 10 consecutive goals. With 768 combined points, the Carlsons (Daniel and Anders) are the all-time leaders in most points scored by a pair of brothers who kicked for the same college. Second are Kris and Drew brown who had 743 points in kicking for Nebraska (1995-98 and 2014-17). Daniel was at Auburn from 2014 to 2017) and Anders from 2018 to today.

* Before Saturday, Auburn and Alabama State had only had one previous encounter – a 63-9 win for the Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
