An individual incarcerated at Auburn Correctional Facility has tested positive for COVID-19, the first among the inmate population at Cayuga County Maximum Security Prison.
The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision reported the positive case on Tuesday. This is the first positive result out of more than 1,000 tests carried out at the prison.
DOCCS has increased testing in New York City prisons. According to ministry reports, testing began last week. On Tuesday, 696 incarcerated people tested negative for COVID-19. There are 338 tests pending.
When an incarcerated individual tests positive for the virus, they are isolated for at least 14 days. They are released from solitary confinement when they have no symptoms and fever without the help of medication for 72 hours.

Auburn’s case is one of 1,709 confirmed cases among the incarcerated population statewide, of which 145 are active cases. So far, the prison has avoided an epidemic. Other prisons have reported a large number of cases. Elmira Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison, has 603 confirmed cases of COVID-19 – the most in the DOCCS system.
There was one positive case involving a person who was previously incarcerated at Auburn Correctional Facility. They were transferred to the Wende Correctional Center in March and tested positive for the virus while in the West New York Jail.
