Auburn returns late for a College World Series victory

In baseball, nothing better than a winning grand slam. And when the ball fell from Rankin Woley's bat in the eighth inning, it certainly looked like what he had done. Another late deficit would turn into a late, heroic victory.

It was not quite the home run that everyone in the stadium assumed. He bounced on the top of the left field wall. Three riders sprinted around the bases. This deficit has turned into a lead and ultimately win 11-7.

Auburn begins to take the habit. After missing the first seven innings, the Tigers once took revenge. The UA – formerly outside of the NCAA Tournament – is now at a victory of its first World Series on College, in 22 years.

The Tigers allowed three points in the first run. Jack Owen allowed the first one before even going out. Two other goals were scored when Will Holland could not knock over a bouncing ball in the middle of the field.

In the opening rounds, Auburn forced UNC starter Tyler Baum to only 44 shots. He was rolling. But Steven Williams also rolled. He lined up a two point circuit in the right field. In four games of the NCAA tournament, Williams has three innings and 12 RBIs.

Owen cleared a two-man RBI single in the fifth and UNC scored again with two outs in the seventh on an Aaron Sabato RBI single – with AU taking the curious decision to pitch it.

But the eighth and ninth rounds completely upset the game. It started with a Kason Howell double to start the eighth inning. Conor Davis had his second double of the game, this one to score a point and make it 5-3. A wild pitch made 5-4. Then Woley broke loose.

In the ninth, Edouard Julien, one of Auburn's players struggling to qualify for the playoffs, had a long and powerful three-way run. That made 11-5, crowning an explosion of offense. The Tigers forced UNC to use five bulls, including the four most effective players on the Tar Heels.

Auburn had no one hit above .290 today. They have 38 races in 4 NCAA tournament games.

The Tigers have struggled all season long at almost every phase of the game. Even now, the best starting pitcher of the AU has maybe 6,10MD. But in the playoffs, everything is together. Now, the AU needs to meet again to get to Omaha.
