By Congressman A. Donald McEachin

Although Congress was recently suspended, several important votes were taken, including the passage by the House of HR 4, the John R. Lewis Advancement of Voting Rights Act, to ensure the protection of the right to vote. vote.

Voting is one of the most sacred rights accorded to Americans, which is why I am proud to be one of the original co-sponsors of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and to help pass this historic legislation. . Congressman Lewis and other warriors in the civil rights movement fought, and even died, to protect the right to vote. Voting rights shouldn’t be a partisan issue, but we are seeing coordinated state-level attacks on voter protection across the country. HR 4 will help ensure national standards for the right to vote and protect Americans’ access to the ballot box.

There are also several contests in the coming months that my constituents can enter. This includes the annual VA-04 photography competition, open to all residents of the neighborhood. Please send the photos to [email protected] by September 30, 2021, with your full name, location of your residence and the location where the photo was taken. The fourth district is a beautiful place with coastlines, rivers, unique city views and other landscapes; therefore, I encourage you to submit your entries. For more information visit my website at mceachin.house.gov.

My office has also started receiving submissions for the Congressional App Challenge. Open to all resident or VA-04 students, the App Challenge is an opportunity for students interested in learning code and computer science to create an original software application. The winner (s) will be able to see their application displayed on the United States Capitol, featured on the United States House of Representatives website, and will be invited to attend a reception on the Capitol. The deadline for entries is November 1, 2021, and details of this competition can also be found on my website.

Finally, I wanted to take this opportunity to express my deep sympathy to the families and friends of the military personnel who lost their lives in the terrorist attack last month in Afghanistan. These soldiers were and remain true heroes.

I salute the tireless work of the U.S. military and State Department officials who risked their lives to evacuate as many Americans, diplomats, civilians, SIV holders, and other Afghan allies from the country as possible. .

As the war in Afghanistan is over, efforts to relocate and support all those who were evacuated continue. For more information on how you can help, how to start a case with my desktop, and other helpful resources, visit my website.

Congressman Donald McEachin represents Virginia’s 4th Congressional District.
