FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) – Augusta Health released an update on Monday to address the prevalence of COVID-19 in the Shenandoah Health District, which continues to rise rapidly and has reached unprecedented levels.

In the 24 hours leading up to 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 95 new positive cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed at Augusta Health testing sites, the highest daily total on record for Augusta Health. The previous single high test day at Augusta Health was New Years Eve, when the total was 82.

As of Sunday, in the 24 hours leading up to 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 29, Augusta Health had 118 new positive cases of COVID-19 diagnosed at Augusta Health testing sites.

Augusta Health’s COVID-19 inpatient count is 43. The vast majority of their COVID-19 inpatients are unvaccinated people.

Weyers Cave emergency care and Stuarts Draft emergency care have been temporarily closed so staff can be redeployed to Staunton and Waynesboro emergency care to help with COVID-19 testing.

Elective surgeries that require hospitalization are under review and some are postponed. The Shenandoah House and skilled nursing units are also temporarily closed so that these personnel can be redeployed to help in other units.

Augusta Health says the staff have responded with a high level of commitment to their patients and the community, and support each other with remarkable teamwork.

Augusta Health implores everyone to vaccinate, to wear masks indoors even if they are vaccinated, and to stay away from others when possible. Authorities say COVID vaccinations are still the most effective and long-lasting way to prevent COVID infections in the community, and the best defense against serious illness and death.
