Lawyer Aurora Health has fired a pharmacist who allegedly tampered with 57 vials of Moderna coronavirus vaccine by intentionally taking them out of a refrigerator. And the Grafton Village Police Department said on Thursday officers had arrested the former employee.
The interference resulted in 57 people receiving ineffective or less effective doses of the vaccine and more than 500 doses were thrown away, reports Alison Dirr for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
In a statement Thursday, Grafton Police said the former pharmacist – a resident of Grafton – admitted to intentionally removing the vials, knowing it would render the vaccine unusable. The ministry withheld his name “pending his old notice of indictment.” The recommended charges include three different crimes.
The episode has sparked outrage nationwide as the country struggles to quickly distribute the vaccines needed to end the pandemic.
“It’s just a monstrous thing to do,” says Sen. Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, tweeted wednesday evening. “We have a lot to worry about with this pandemic, but I never thought we would have a vaccine saboteur.”
Programming note: Wisconsin’s COVID-19 update will begin on Friday. We will be back Monday afternoon in the New Year.

Calculate your risk of exposure
In Wisconsin, even small gatherings can carry a great risk of exposure to the coronavirus, according to a national tool that estimates the danger based on the size of the gathering and the county in which it takes place. Data scientists from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Stanford University developed the tool, which you can find here.
