Legend

The dawn of this week came during a geomagnetic storm

A photographer from these regions captured an image of Aurora Borealis illuminating the night sky over the black island in the Highlands.

Martin Macbeath photographed the Northern Lights earlier this week.

Auroras are caused by the interaction of the solar wind – a stream of charged particles escaping from the Sun – and the magnetic field and atmosphere of the Earth.

When weather conditions are favorable, Scotland, the north of England and Northern Ireland are one of the best places to observe aurora or aurora borealis, a phenomenon often known.

This week's display took place during a geomagnetic storm that BBC Weather Watchers has dubbed the beginning of the new "aurora season".
