A 4.7 meter MONSTER saltwater crocodile – the largest ever found in the Katherine River systems – was finally captured yesterday after a decade-long hunt.

Rangers from NT Parks and Wildlife caught record salty 60 km downstream of Katherine Township.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Tourism and Culture said the rangers had removed the 600 kg hook from a trap. "They were surprised because it's unusual to find a fang of its size in this region," she said.

"He is the largest crocodile that the wildlife operations team has ever caught in the Katherine River."

GET FULL She said the rangers found that the average size of crocodiles in the area was about 4.2 meters.

"Big crocodiles can roam in the Top-End streams without being detected and you should always be Crocwise," she said.

The Rangers also caught a smaller 2.3m crocodile from a trap in the Katherine River near the same area yesterday.

NT Parks and Wildlife observed three large crocodiles during aerial surveys in May. To report a crocodile problem, call a wildlife ranger from the Darwin Parks and Wildlife Commission at 0419 822 859 or Katherine at 0407 958 405.
