Man charged over Burswood gas emergency

A 45-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly threatened to set a gas bottle alight at a housing unit in Burswood on Monday night

POLICE have charged a man after he allegedly threatened to set a gas bottle alight at a housing unit in Burswood on Monday night.

Firefighters and members of the Tactical Response Group where called to an address on Claude Street at about 5pm.

Police will allege the 45-year-old man opened a gas canister and sprayed the gas around the bottom of a stairwell inside the building.

Residents were forced to barricade themselves upstairs.

It will also be alleged the man had a lighter and threatened to set the gas alight.

After the man fled the scene St John Ambulance officers treated a number of residents.

Two were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police arrested the 45-year-old on Tuesday morning and charged him with an act endangering a life.

He will appear in the Perth Magistrate’s Court today.
