With more Victorians living in rental apartments, animal lovers are starting to wonder why homeowners do not let them keep furry friends.
Pet Insurance Australia has published a list of ideal dogs in the apartments and said the owners had to "understand" about owning a pet because the rental housing for their owners is ridiculously limited.
A study by rent.com.au, which has 70,000 rental properties in its database, found that only 10% of properties nationwide were listed as "pet-friendly".
And 40% explicitly stated that pets were not welcome.
"It is time we saw a real shift in mindset to allow more pet owners to access safe and reliable homes," said Nadia Crighton of Pet Insurance Australia.
The state government estimates that one in three Victorians owns a dog and recognizes that owning an animal is beneficial mentally and physically.
Last month, Prime Minister Daniel Andrews announced the creation of 15 new leaseless dog parks in Melbourne ahead of the November 24 legislative elections.
"More dog parks means more open spaces for families and their pets, close to home," he said.
The workforce said it would identify "underutilized" parks or reserves suitable for closed dog parks in 12 areas of the local board.
VetShop Australia's veterinarian and director, Dr. Mark Perissinotto, urges homeowners anxious to let pets enter their rental housing to communicate well with tenants.
