A chemical emergency at an industrial site south of Perth exposed five workers to a deadly gas.

The terminal at Kwinana Pier was closed and the roads were closed with fears that ammonia would spread to nearby suburbs.

The chemical was found leaking from a hose at 10:30 am while it was being unloaded from a refueling vessel to a storage tank at the CSBP site.

The five male employees involved were transported to the hospital where they are in stable condition.

We have already been allowed to go home.

Fourteen fire crews arrived at the scene this morning after reports of an explosion.

Fortunately, there was none, and the leak was quickly cut off – automatically detected by computer software.

Investigations are now underway.
