A new Anglican bishop was elected to the Diocese of Canberra-Goulburn.
Reverend Dr. Mark Short was chosen as the eleventh bishop by a two-day meeting at the Goulburn Electoral Synod in New South Wales, the Anglican Church announced Saturday afternoon.
Reverend Dr. Short, who will replace Bishop Stuart Robinson, was chosen by a synod of 124 clergy and 175 lay representatives of the diocese.
The new bishop, married with two children, is currently National Director of the Bush Church Aid Society. Previously, he was Rector of Turvey Park and Archdeacon of Wagga Wagga.
"Mark brings to this position a great experience in the national ministry, with the supervision and pastoral care of gospel workers across the country, as well as in the parish ministry of the regions and rural areas," said Bishop Trevor Edwards, President of the Synod.
He was educated at Moore Theological College and the University of Durham, UK, and became an Anglican priest in 1997.
Reverend Short was also a reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald and a graduate economist with the Commonwealth Industrial Relations Department.
He will badume responsibility for 62 parishes and mission districts, eight schools and agencies such as Anglicare after his dedication to St. Savior Cathedral in Goulburn early next year.
