Australian weather forecasts: colder forecasts for the east coast

Do not start taking out beach umbrellas and summer swimsuits yet – cooler weather is about to hit Australia's east coast again.

Melbourne will be the most affected, going from a hot 31C on Tuesday to 20C on Wednesday.

And Sydney is about to spend a week in the rain after enjoying clear conditions for the beach throughout the weekend.

Temperatures of about 20 to 20 years are expected this week in New South Wales and Victoria.

Meteorologist Tristan Meyers told Sky News Weather that Melbourne would be hit by a thick cloud and fog, but that the weather would be sunny by the weekend.

"For Sydney, it's a different story, with a chance of showers and storms on Wednesday," said Meyers.

"Unfortunately, these downpours will last until the weekend and the weather will be very wet on Saturday and afternoon.

"It's really a change of pace compared to the good weather we've had in the last two days."

Meyers said temperatures would drop three or four degrees, a few degrees below average for this time of year.

Canberra will be less affected by the change in climate that will affect NSW in the coming days.

Further south, a cold front heading for Tasmania causes low clouds over southern Australia and the southern coast of Western Australia.

Further north, along the east coast, it is not surprising that Queensland escapes the cold and remains relatively warm.

Spring is said to be the most changing season for Melbourne.

"The spring months are those where the contrast is the most important," said Tom Fejes of the Bureau of Meteorology.

"This is partly due to the city's proximity to the northern chains. As the weather warms, warm air moves south, resulting in warmer temperatures.

"Sydney also gets these big busts from the south, but with the humidity, you do not notice that much."
