Five "unpredictable" and potentially violent escapees are still fugitives in Mid West this morning after a mbadive escape to Greenough Regional Jail, about 400 kilometers north of Perth.
In total, 10 inmates escaped from the prison – on the outskirts of Geraldton – yesterday afternoon during a "disturbance" to the institution, and five were resumed from one day to the next .

The mother of a prisoner who was not involved in the escape said that her son had called her and told her that the prisoners "fled" and broke the windows

Responding to the escape, the Union of WA Prison Officers (WAPOU) said that the state government has been warned of "unsustainable" staff at regional jails during a meeting with the Ministry of Justice earlier in the day.
WAPOU Interim Secretary Paul Ledingham said the lack of personnel was a national issue.
"They have to act now and they have to finance what is an overcrowded prison population," he said.
Greenough Prison is designed to hold 223 inmates
However, a report from inspector Neil Morgan early in 2017 revealed that the institution held 323 prisoners at the time , which means that he was working at nearly 150 percent
He found that relations between staff and inmates had fallen to such a low level that they represented a security risk.
"The increase in the number of detainees, the declining budget and the need to do more with less is putting pressure on the prison," Morgan said.
There was more concern about overcrowding at the prison last year when it was revealed that some inmates were forced to sleep on the floor.
