A four-week-old baby girl has been left clinging to life in hospital with critical head and chest injuries after allegedly being badaulted by her father.
The newborn baby was taken to hospital a week ago after she began suffering seizures and on Tuesday police arrested a 25-year-old man over the matter.
The 25-year-old man from Cartwright in Sydney’s south west was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm in Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday. However, he was granted bail.
It’s alleged that the man admitted to police that he shook his four-week-old daughter so violently that she is now fighting for her life in hospital.
The court heard that on November 7, the man was getting frustrated with the newborn’s cries before he allegedly squeezed her stomach and shook her back and forth.
“He was in a position of authority where he was meant to be caring for the child”, said police prosecutor Sam Kalimeris in court.
The court also heard that the baby’s mother was in the shower at the time of the incident, but she chose to rush the baby to Liverpool Hospital after she noticed that something was wrong.
The infant suffered a seizure and also has swelling on the brain and serious damage to neck tissue and ribs.
The little girl is now at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where she remains in a critical but stable condition.
9 News has reported that doctors are currently unsure if the little girl will survive but it is likely that if she does, she will “more than likely” have permanent damage.
The father, who has not been identified, has been banned from going within 50 metres of The Children’s Hospital where his daughter remains. He must also surrender his pbadport, report daily to police and live with his mother in Glenfield.
The main remained in custody on Wednesday while his paperwork was filed but is due to be released unable on later today.
The matter is expected to return to Parramatta local Court on November 28.
