Emergency services will be prevented from responding to fires in some parts of the Darwin CBD, according to a Council report, due to 39, a multi-million dollar shade structure The $ 2.7 million canopy will cover parts of Cavenagh Street in an effort to reduce tropical heat – but a report prepared by Darwin's City Council has "Identified an access issue for large fire emergency vehicles" used by the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS)
"The largest air craft of the NTFRS would have trouble clearing vehicles parked outside the bend in the current arrangement, "the report says. The NTFRS has, however, requested the removal of three parking spaces on the adjacent Litchfield Street to accommodate the emergency response vehicles – a recommendation supported by the report.
In a news release, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL) stated that NTPFES was consulted during the canopy design and had access to the Fighting Fire in Adjacent Buildings

The Council's report follows the destruction of the Darwin RSL – also on Cavenagh Street – when it was the first of its kind. A fire broke out last month, threatening to extend to nearby buildings in the CBD

Emergency services were forced to deploy the Bronto Skylift hydraulic platform, with a 26.5-meter range, to fight the fire.
Construction is already underway on the 50-meter structure that the NT government hopes to "cool down on the street and reduce ambient temperatures."
Cavenagh Street has been identified as one of the most hottest in the city, with surface temperatures above 60 degrees.
