Australia posted its highest daily record of COVID cases on Saturday, with the country’s most populous states reporting 361 new cases of the Delta variant.
With more than 15 million people in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, which make up 60% of the country’s population, under strict lockdown, the country has also reported five deaths – one of the highest daily totals this year. The region has been in containment for six weeks.
New South Wales had its worst pandemic day, reporting 319 new cases, according to Reuters.
Authorities said residents were slow to comply with the new lockdown rules.
“What is happening right now is some people are not complying,” NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.
“Just stay home – it’s the circuit breaker. Stay home and get vaccinated.
