The Australian state of Victoria reported its highest daily record of COVID-19 cases on Friday.

Victoria reported 1,838 new cases and five new deaths, becoming the ninth consecutive day the state has seen more than 1,000 reported cases, The Associated Press reported.

The state with the second highest population in the country has more than 16,000 current active coronavirus cases.

The more than 1,800 cases on Friday are the highest daily total number of COVID-19 cases of any region in Australia throughout the pandemic, according to the AP.

Infections are declining in other regions, such as the state of New South Wales, as Australia plans to leave international travelers in the country in 2022.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has previously said he wants some countries to be able to travel to Australia without quarantine in 2022.

Australia has implemented some of the most stringent travel requirements during the pandemic, with Morrison saying he wants to bring international students and skilled immigrants back to the country first.

Throughout the pandemic, Australia has reported more than 122,000 cases and more than 1,400 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
