The bigger it is, the better it is. At least skiers and snowboarders have this motto. If you want to choose a winter sports resort, you pay particular attention to the size of the slopes and the size of the resort. According to the study "Best Ski Resort 2018", these are the most important selection criteria of customers.

Thus, in the top 10 most popular winter sports areas of the Alps, there are mainly large ski areas. Zermatt has the best of the Swiss candidates: the Valais region with 360 km of slopes and 53 lifts is second. Zermatt was beaten by Kronplatz this year (119 kilometers of tracks and 32 lifts). The third row is shared between Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis in Tyrol and Val Gardena in South Tyrol.

"The big ones have advantages"

According to Andreas Deuber, director of the Institute of Tourism and Recreation HTW Chur, large ski areas are not automatically the most profitable. And it is the XL zones that give the best results in the survey, but that does not mean that winter sports fans want only large areas.

Ten criteria were requested for the study "Best Ski Resort 2018". 46,000 winter athletes participated. "With this procedure, larger areas offering a full range of services automatically bring benefits," says Deuber.

Switzerland is the strongest of the top 10: in total, five Swiss ski resorts ranked among the top ten. You can see in the photo gallery which areas were in the top 10.

Grächen clears up

The most successful newcomer this year is Grächen, canton Valais. The spa was made a name a few years ago by presenting the "Grächner-Euro-Mindestkurs".

Grächen is relatively small compared to the other ski resorts in the top 10. The ski area offers 44 km of slopes and only 10 lifts. "All the more so as I see the good results from Grächen," says tourism expert Deuber. Small ski resorts have "a definitive future", but not all. The accessibility, positioning and reliability of the snow are the friction points "Many smaller areas are actually at lower altitudes and are therefore at risk."

Grächen is brightened up in several categories: in the areas of conviviality, children / family and entertainment, the Valais ski resort took first place. Respondents also gave good after-ski ratings: in this category, the spa is second only to Ischgl.
