Geneva (APA / AFP) – The United Nations Human Rights Committee has denounced the ban on the Nikab facial veil in France. The ban violates religious freedom and the human rights of women, the committee said Tuesday in Geneva.
The group of experts had been summoned by two French Muslim French women, who had to pay a fine in 2012 for wearing the Nikab in public. The French government defended the law.
The UN Human Rights Committee, made up of 18 independent experts, called on France to compensate women and to revise the law. However, it can only make recommendations that are not legally binding.
The French government immediately rejected the critics. The concealment of the face was incompatible with the fundamental values of a democratic and open society, said the Foreign Office in Paris. She referred to a judgment of the European Court of Human Rights and announced that she would defend her position in a statement to the UN Human Rights Committee.
In 2011, France was the first country in Europe to ban the burka from the full veil and the Nikab, which completely covers the face up to the eyes. Since then, women who wear the full veil in public are fined 150 euros. The European Court of Human Rights has declared that the disguised ban in France in 2014 was legal.
The Human Rights Committee, however, was not convinced that the ban was necessary for security reasons and for the coexistence of French society. Although the chairman of the committee, Yuval Shany stressed that he and other members of the committee saw "a form of repression" of women in the Nikab. A ban could lead to the fact that porters do not even leave the house.
